Birds and WordPress Core
Birds is a product made of a theme, a focused plugin, and the WordPress Core beneath them.
The boundary matters. It lets Birds offer a polished, immediate front end without pretending that a feed needs to replace WordPress.
The Theme
Birds Theme owns the visible experience: feed, thread, topics, archives, search, responsive layout, and the Classic Mac OS 9-inspired visual language. It presents ordinary WordPress content as a living stream.
The Core plugin
Birds Core adds the small set of operations that make the front end feel complete: publish, edit, move to trash, open or close replies, and manage replies according to WordPress capabilities and safeguards.
The WordPress boundary
Posts, Comments, Users, Categories, Search, Archives, permissions, nonces, and administration remain native WordPress. There is no custom database table and no proprietary content model. Disable the plugin and the Theme remains a usable feed and thread presentation.
That is the point of the architecture: a distinctive experience on top, a durable platform underneath, and a small enough boundary to understand.
Mac OS and the stream
The Mac OS 9 reference is not a costume placed over a social product. It is a way to make the interface explicit, friendly, and easy to read at a glance.
Windows and context
Title bars, status bars, borders, and small controls tell the reader where they are. The feed remains the main object; the chrome gives it a frame and a sense of place.
Less hidden state
Birds keeps Topics and About in the rail and leaves presence, follows, and notifications for a later conversation about real use. A calm first version is easier to read, easier to maintain, and more honest about what the product does.
Retro as product language
The reference also gives the product a memorable identity. Birds can feel like a distinct environment without abandoning responsive layout, readable typography, or the ordinary WordPress pages beneath it.

Why a feed?
A feed is useful when publishing and reading belong to the same moment. It gives a group a shared sense of now without asking every thought to become a polished article.
Birds starts with the smallest complete loop: a member writes a normal WordPress Post, it appears in the stream, another reader opens the thread, and a native Comment becomes the reply.
From thought to shared context
The value is not the scroll by itself. It is the short distance between an idea and the people who can respond to it. The composer makes publishing visible; the thread keeps the response attached to its source.
Small enough to keep
That loop does not need a new data model. WordPress continues to provide search, categories, archives, users, feeds, and moderation, while Birds shapes the experience around them.
