Widgets are sometimes dismissed as an old WordPress mechanism. Used carefully, they remain a practical way to keep a publication’s frame editable.
A text widget can introduce the site. A menu widget can provide a second route through the archive. A recent-posts or categories widget can keep the context column alive without adding custom template logic.
The important thing is placement. A widget is useful when its location gives it meaning.
